Influenced by his sister, Seung-woo also began wanting to be a performer in musicals. Jo Seung-woo grew up in a musical family: his father Jo Kyung-soo is a singer, and his older sister Jo Seo-yeon acts in musical theater. During his high school years, Seung-woo was notorious for his disregard for education. He often carried musical CDs in his backpack rather than books.
