Hyun Bin and Yoona in Confidential Assignment
The film is a 10 billion won (approximately $8.5 million) project that centers around a joint North-South Korean investigation. It opens with the scene of Im Chul-ryung (Hyun Bin), an officer of a special investigation team in North Korea, who goes to a disturbance at a warehouse that prints counterfeit bills. Im Chul-ryung’s superior Cha Ki-sung (Kim Ju-hyeok) and his own team are there to steal the master plates to print the counterfeit bills. A shootout takes place and, in the process, Im Chul-ryung is shot and others are killed. North Korean officials later learn that Cha Ki-sung has fled to South Korea. Im Chul-ryung is ordered to capture Cha Ki-sung and retrieve the stolen master plates. He is given only 3 days to complete his mission. For the first time, South Korea and North Korea decide to cooperate to catch a criminal. South Korean officials though have doubts whether Cha Ki-sung is really a killer. Detective Kang Jin-tae (Yu Hae-jin) from Seoul is ordered to watch over Im Chul-ryung closely while he is in South Korea. The film is a major success and opened in second place at the box office on January 18th. It rose to first place in its second week selling an accumulative 4 million tickets by January 30th and surpassed the 5 million mark two days later. With that, the film became the most viewed Korean movie during the first half of 2017 by attracting 7.8 million audiences locally. Aside from the national success, the film was also sold to 42 territories, including the U.S. and several countries in Asia. Yoona played the role of Park Min-young, the younger sister-in-law of Kang Jin-tae, who has a big crush on Hyun Bin. In one of the promotional videos released for the movie, Yoona and Hyun Bin make a cute pair. The scene shows the epilog of the movie. After North and South Korea have finished their mission, so South Korean detective Kang Jin-tae (Yoo Hae-jin) and his entire family usher in the departure of North Korean detective Im Chul-ryung (Hyun Bin), returning to his country. Park Min-young (Yoona) also appears and looks really strange while saying, “When will we meet again?” Then, Im Chul-ryung answers, “If this country becomes one,” and lies to Min-young that he already has a lover. This made the audiences laugh.

Not only in front of the camera, but Yoona and Hyun Bin also show amazing chemistry off-screen! On January 6th, Confidential Assignment aired interviews on V Live that featured the actors. Yoona opened up about her first time filming a movie, revealing, “This is my first movie and I think I matched well with it. I learned a lot on the set. Many of them gave me advice as well,” sharing her thankful heart with her co-stars, like Hyun Bin, Yoo Hae-jin, and Kim Joo-hyuk. During the press conference for the movie, Yoona said that she was very comfortable with her role because it fits her actual self.
Later, it was revealed that Yoona is a Hyun Bin fangirl! She even openly praised Hyun Bin’s good looks. In the episode of Happy Together 3 aired on August 10th, Yoona made a guest appearance. During the talk, MC Yoo Jae-suk said, “YoonA was a scene stealer in the film Cooperation.” The members responded, “[Of all roles YoonA has played], that character was the most similar to YoonA’s actual self.” Yoona added that statement by saying, “Hyun Bin was so handsome so there wasn’t much to act. I found myself saying, ‘He’s so cool’. He did help in my acting.” However, it’s not only Yoona who shows a lot of appreciation toward her co-star, but Hyun Bin also praises her a lot. During an interview on January 13th, actor Hyun Bin talked about his Confidential Assignment co-star and praised her hardworking mindset. Hyun Bin said, “YoonA did really well on set. It’s not up to me to judge her acting skills. It was great to see her be so dedicated.” He also complimented YoonA’s comical transformation in the film, saying, “She has played the main character in dramas and I think it was a good choice to pick this film to be her first. I loved seeing her work so hard and I’m looking forward to her future activities.” The two also made a selfie together along with other actors in the movie. It was taken sometime after one of the film promotional events. In the picture, Yoona and Hyun Bin are next to each other and look compact while smiling.
