About ‘Midnight Runners’
The K-Drama Midnight Runners (청년경찰) is a comedy-action film directed by Jason Kim (Kim Joo-hwan) and produced by Kim Jae-joong. The movie was distributed by Lotte Entertainment with running time of 109 minutes, and stars actors Park Seo-joon and Kang Ha-neul. Midnight Runners is a story of best friends who are played by Park Seo-joon and Kang Ha-neul, who were students from Korean National Police University. The two friends become the witnesses of a kidnapping scene on their way back from a club at 1 PM. The local police station was too busy at the time so they began their own amateur investigation to find out about the missing person. Following the suspect, Park Seo-joon and Kang Haneul ended up finding more girls locked up and they decide to try to save them. The friends had been having a nightmare that time since they got beaten and were locked up, too. After the two men chased the suspect of the kidnapping, they came back to the street to find out more about the scene. They didn’t come as police officers, and their professor didn’t tell them any more about the case, so they started to investigate on their own. They even passed the heavy training for becoming police and managed to track down the suspect with a few CCTV scenes, which led them to a fertility clinic. As the two were going stronger, they could release the girls who had been locked up, caught the kidnappers, and called the police. After doing the right things, they were expelled and sentenced to larger community service. The two handsome actors were having an interview on Section TV on Ju;y 24, 2017 to promote their movie, Midnight Runners. At the time, Kang Ha-neul and Park Seo-joon showed how close they were. What makes this movie a unique one is because it still has a fresh comedy despite a serious story-line throughout the movie. The scenes mostly came from the dialogue between Ki Joon and Hee Yeol and, since there was a lack of slapstick, the viewers often laughed every time the funny and silly scenes were played out. The handsome actors didn’t put too much effort into acting in the comedy scenes because they already had such a natural chemistry with each other. Park Seo-jun, himself, is good at playing comedy roles and Ki Joon’s character is very well suited to being played by the actor who was born on December 16, 1988. The action scenes are enough to make your eyes widen, since there are no shots or using of other complicated weapons like in normal action films. Only the bare hand and occasional blunt weapons were used. Meanwhile, on the other side, Kang Ha-neul, who plays a bookworm was not as ‘fierce’ as his friend, Ki Joon. Even so, he still caught the viewer’s attention as he fought the kidnapper/mafia boss of a young woman with two police batons. Very impressive. The actor did a great job playing a nerdy man who likes challenges. He made a great partner for Park Seo-jun in this movie.
