Acoustic
‘Acoustic’ is a 2010 South Korean omnibus film depicting stories of love, hope, and music among twenty-somethings. Omnibus film, also known as anthology film, is a sub-genre of cinema consisting of several different short films, often tied together by only a single theme, premise, or brief interlocking event (often a turning point). All the stories in this movie are set within the Hongdae area of Seoul.
In this film, Shin Se-kyung played Se Kyung in episode 1, ‘Broccoli’. She is a singer-songwriter who is suffering from a rare disease, and can only survive on instant cup ramen noodles. Rejected by record executives for her “mushy” music and told she can only sell her looks, she runs out of the hospital in order to make known what could be her last song.
Hindsight
‘Hindsight’, also known as ‘Blue Salt’, is a South Korean action-drama film from 2011. The film is about the legendary retired gangster Yoon Doo-hun (Song Kang-ho), who dreams of opening a restaurant and enrolls in a cooking class. In the class, he gets to know Jo Se-bin (Shin Se-kyung). Doo-hun hears that his former boss, Man-gil, has died after being hit by a car; the gang’s members need to find Man-gil’s will to see whom he nominated as his successor, though most of them expect it to be Doo-hun. Meanwhile, Se-bin’s roommate, Lee Eun-jung (Esom), has become indebted to some Haeundae moneylenders, who force Se-bin, in return, to spy on Doo-hun. After Eun-jung steals a suitcase containing cocaine from the moneylenders, Se-bin is ordered to kill Doo-hun but can’t bring herself to do it. Instead, Eun-jung tries to run him over with a car and subsequently disappears. Doo-hun survives and takes over as head of his old gang, intent on discovering who killed Man-gil. Among various problems, he has to contend with Baek Kyung-min (Lee Jong-hyuk), an ambitious young member of the gang, and his continuing relationship with Se-bin, who is under pressure from the assassination agency head, Madame Kang (Youn Yuh-jung), to kill him. The movie is set in Busan, South Korea.
In this film, Shin Se-kyung played as Jo Se-bin, a young national shooting athlete-turned-assassin. The film deals with issues of age difference, and with the Korean underworld. It premiered at the 16th Busan International Film Festival. The film received a total of 763,776 admissions nationwide.
Soar Into The Sun
‘Soar Into the Sun’ is also known as ‘R2B: Return To Base’ and ‘Black Eagle.’ This film is a 2012 South Korean aviation action-drama film loosely based on the critically acclaimed 1986 film Top Gun. It is about a talented, yet trouble-making, elite air force pilot who is demoted to a combat flying unit.
In this film, Shin Se-kyung played Yoo Se-young, a Technical Sergeant, 21st Fighter Wing mechanic, and also Captain Jung Tae-yoon’s (Rain) love interest. This film was released on August 15, 2012. Before the film’s release, it was reported to have been sold to 30 countries including Thailand, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other parts of Asia as well as England, France, Germany, and Italy. It was also set to screen in 13 cities across North America, premiering in Los Angeles on August 24 and continuing in San Diego, Seattle, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, Honolulu, Toronto, and Vancouver in Canada. It finally closed in Chicago on August 31. The Republic of Korea Air Force was heavily involved to support filming. The film was a final acting project for Rain, before he enlisted to serve his mandatory military service in October, after filming wrapped in September, 2011.
Tazza: The Hidden Card
‘Tazza: Hidden Card’ is a 2014 South Korean gambling film based on Huh Young-man and Kim Se-yeong’s manhwa of the same name. This film is a sequel to the 2006 film ‘Tazza: The High Rollers’. The story begings after Ham Dae-gil (T.O.P) enters the gambling world and he is set up as the fall guy in a crooked deal. To get revenge, he enters a final game which could be fatal to the loser.
In this film, Shin Se-kyung was cast as Heo Mi-na. Thanks to her role in this film, Shin Se-kyung won the ‘Popular Star Award’ at the 35th Blue Dragon Film Awards. This film was released on September 3, 2014.
