Won Bin is a famous actor in Korea, and he’s played a number of characters with his excellent acting skill in movies and dramas before he went on his hiatus. Although is’s been a long time since his last movie,his name is still well-known among K-Drama’s lovers because of his awesome acting with every character he’s played. First, let’s get nostalgic with the K-Dramas that successfully brought him to people’s attention.

Autumn In My Heart

“Autumn In My Heart” is a Korean romantic drama that was released by KBS2 fromSeptember 18 until November 7, 2000, in South Korea. This famous K-Drama was directed by Yoon Seok-Ho and was written by Oh Yoo-Yun, starring three main characters that were played by Song Hye-Kyo, Song Seung-Hoon and of course, Won Bin. For you who haven’t watched this drama yet, it is about a girl named Eun Seo who realized that her family wasn’t her real family because they were not blood-related, and after many years of being separated, Eun-Seo and her biological brother, Joon-Seo, turned to love each other not as a brother and sister again. Things just became twisted, and it turned to be sad love story. “Autumn In My Heart” touched people’s hearts and it became one of the most popular K-Drama until now. The story made whoever watched it cry at most of the scenes. Won Bin’s part in this drama is one of the roles that gave real impact to this drama. He played as a character named Han Tae-Seok that once treated Eun-Seo (Song Hye-Kyo) arrogantly but then fell in love with her and would do everything for her, even though she doesn’t love him back. He’s also Joon-Seo’s friend.

“Autumn In My Heart” brought many awards for their excellent melodrama story and for Won Bin, who won awards such as “Best New Actor for TV” at the 37th Baeksang Arts Awards and “Excellence Award for Actor” at the KBS Drama Awards in 2000.

Friends

“Friends” is a South Korean (MBC) and Japanese (TBS) short collaboration drama and was the first collaboration drama in history between South Korea and Japan. This drama aired on February 4 to February 5, 2002, in Japan and February 15 to February 16, 2002, in South Korea and starred Won Bin as the male lead role character and Japanese actress Kyoko Fukada as female lead role character. “Friends” was directed by Nobuhiro Doi and Han Chul-Soo. The story is about Tomoko (Kyoko Fukada) and Ji-Hoon (Won Bin), who accidentally met each other with a unique way, when Tomoko falsely judged Ji-Hoon as the culprit who snatched her purse. As a payment for her judgement, Ji-Hoon asked her to become an actress for a movie that he wanted to make, which made them slowly fall in love with each other. Won Bin played as Ji-Hoon, a Korean man that had a dream to became a film director but must resume his studying to join his family business. Many people said that the chemistry between Won Bin and Kyoko Fukada was brilliant in this drama.

Taegukgi

“Taegukgi”, or as people know this movie as “The Brotherhood of War” is a 2004 South Korean wartime action drama film that starred Jang Dong-Gun and Won Bin as main characters. “Taegukgi” was released on February 6, 2004 and the duration for this movie is about 140 minutes. “Taegukgi” was directed by Kang Je-Gyu, written by Kang Je-Gyu, too, with Han Ji-Hoon and Kim San-Don, and produced by Choi Jin-Hwa, Lee Se-Ho, Lee Sung-Hoon, Jung Ji-Hoon, Hwang Gyun-Jung, Oh Jung-Hyun and Kim Kyoung-Mok.

The plot of this movie was about Jin-Tae, who was played by Jang Dong-Gun, and Jin-Seok who was played by Won Bin. They were brothers who are unwillingly drafted into the South Korean army following the outbreak of the Korean War in June, 1950. “Taegukgi” successfully got two awards for “Best Cinematography” and “Best Technical Achievement” at the 2004 Critics Choice Awards. This movie became one of the biggest successes in South Korean film history up to that time. Won Bin’s cast as Lee Jin-Seok, Jin-Tae’s brother, who survived from a fire that was set by the security commander when they wre arrested in prison because the brothers tried to rescue Young-Shin’s fiancee, Kim Young-Shin (Lee Eun-Ju), who was suspected of joining the Communist party during the Communist occupation. His acting was so brilliant and can bring us to feel Jin-Seok’s emotions during his journey to get back his brother.

My Brother

“My Brother” is the next top movie that Won Bin had been cast in. This movie was directed and written by Ahn Kwon-Tae and released on October 8, 2004. Korean actors Shin Ha-Kyun and Won Bin took important parts as main characters for the plot. “My Brother” told us about two brothers, Seong-Hyun (Shin Ha-Kyun) who is good at studying and has a warm heart, and his younger brother, Jong-Hyun (Won Bin), who is only good at fighting, and has a good-looking appearance. They’ve been fighting for their entire 17 years of life, beginning after their mother favored Seong-Hyun over Jong-Hyun, and it was getting worse when they fell for the same girl. When the long-held emotions exploded in a huge fight, the older brother asked Jong-Hyun if he would call him as his ‘Hyung’ (Older brother). In this movie, Won Bin took a character with bad behavior but who truly had a good heart. And of course, he played a bad boy wonderfully.

Mother

“Mother” is a Korean mystery-drama movie that was released on May 28, 2009, produced by Park Tae-Jun, Moon Yang-Kwon, and Seo Woo-Sik. This movie was directed by Bong Joon-Ho who also wrote the plot for this movie, too, with Park Bun-Kyo. Mother opened #1 at the South Korean Box Office and sold more than 800,000 tickets on more than 750 screens during its opening weekend from May 29 to May 31, 2009, and successfully earned many awards.

The story of “Mother” is about unnamed widow that was played by veteran Korean actress Kim Hye-Ja, who was selling medicinal herbs in a small town while conducting unlicensed acupunture to the twon’s women on the side. She lived alone with her only son, Do-Jun. One day, Do-Jun was arrested for murdering a high school girl, but he wasn’t responsible for her death. His mother desperately searched for the real killer who framed her son with the murderer’s horrific case. Won Bin played as Yoon Do-Jun, the son, who has an intellectual disability and is then falsely accused of the murder of a girl in this movie. Won Bin was nominated in “Best Supporting Actor” at the Asian Film Awards and “Best Actor” at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

The Man from Nowhere

“The Man from Nowhere” is Won Bin’s last movie that he played in before going on hiatus. This movie was produced by Lee Tae-Hun and Kim Sung-Woo, directed and written by Lee Jeong-Beom. “The Man from Nowhere” was released on August 5, 2010. This movie was also opened #1 at the South Korean Box Office by collecting more than 700,000 admissions on its opening weekend, from August 6 until August 8, 2010. “The Man from Nowhere” is a movie about Cha Tae-Sik, that was played by Won Bin. He was known only as ‘Ahjussi’ in his neighborhood and ran a pawn shop in a seedy part of town. Then, trouble began when Hyo-Jeong, played by Kim Hyo-Seo, a dancer at a nightclub, pawns off a bag to Tae-Sik with a camera, but what was really in the bag is the heroin that she stole from the nightclub. Then, some mafia men came looking for Hyo-Jeong, knowing she stole the heroin. The mafia already had Hyo-Jeong’s daughter, So-Mi (Kim Sae-Ron), in their hands and drove off with Hyo-Jeong, too, after Tae-Sik gave the bag to him. Then, he went after the troubles that took him to face his own mysterious past, too.

Won Bin’s most notable scene in this movie was when he jumped out of the window while be pursued by police officers, which was actually filmed in several takes, while the cameraman ran behind Won Bin as he jumped out the window and both of them used wires. Won Bin won several awards for his role in “The Man from Nowhere”, such as “Best Actor” at the 2010 Korean Film Awards, “Most Popular Stars” at the 2010 Blue Dragon Film Awards, “Popularity Award” and “Best Actor” at the 2010 Daejong Film Awards, and again as “Best Actor” at the 2010 (2nd) KOFRA Film Awards Ceremony.  

When Will Won Bin Comeback?

There are a lot of people who have criticized Won Bin about how he hasn’t been on any dramas nor movies in such a long time. He once got a lot of hate comments for rejecting an offer to act in the movie “WITH GOD” in 2015. Otherwise, Won Bin has starred in so many commercial films that many people call him the “King of CF” now. Won Bin’s income is sourced at around 600 to 700 million KRW, or around $540,000 to $630,000 USD. People assume that with generous compensation like that from CFs, the actor could just do nothing but star in CFs for the rest of his life, which makes them disappointed, combined with the fact that Won Bin is still going to be inactive in the acting field. Won Bin’s wife, Korean actress Lee Na-Young, revealed that her husband was aware of the criticism on his long hiatus. She said that Won Bin wants to delivered a message with his production, but he was concerned because there weren’t many out there. He still hasn’t found the right project yet, with a meaningful story. In other ways, Lee Na-Young broke his nine year long hiatus and got back to acting field by playing in the K-Drama “Romance Is a Bonus Book” that aired from January 26 to March 17, 2019. Won Bin hasn’t made any announcements about when he will return to acting in dramas and movies and still continues his work with many CFs. In 2018, Won Bin had a fan signing event to break his hiatus time. He greeted his fans and earnestly engaged with 100 lucky fans who visited the venue. Lately, according to hellokpop.com, Won Bin has posed for the golf wear brand Jean-Michael Basquiat’s spring collection. He stole people’s attention for his manly aura in the photos. In the released photographs, Won Bin’s fashion style displayed the perfect outfit to wear in spring whether for work in the city or as a lounging weekend style. He also caught by CCTV cameras near a cafe. Fans were amazed to see the actor’s good looks even though it was only a screenshot of CCTV footage.
