What is Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend?

Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend is a revival version of the long-running program Immortal Songs that is served to feature six idol singers per episode who would perform songs by the singer of the episode. The show was originally broadcast as Immortal Songs 2 as part of the KBS Saturday Freedom. The show was first running from June 4th, 2011 to March 31st, 2012. After a restructuring in 2012, the show returned on April 7th as an independent program and rebranded as Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend. Each episode now features seven singers or groups from diverse backgrounds and years of experience, ranging from members of popular K-Pop idol groups to legendary solo artists. As before, they each perform their own reinterpreted versions of famous songs by the legendary singer of the episode. A noted feature of the new format is the “special episodes” which revolve around specific themes, such as festive or commemorate events. The show is hosted by Shin Dong-yup as the primary MC along with Moon Hee-joon, Jung Jae-hyung, and Kim Tae-woo as the current waiting room MCs. Immortal Songs 2 is airing on KBS2 every Saturday at 19:10 KST and will re-run every Sunday at 13:20 KST, Monday at 07:50 KST, Tuesday at 10:15 and Wednesday at 23:05 KST.

The Concept

Each episode will invite 7 singers to perform their reinterpreted versions of famous songs by the legendary singer of the episode. Guest singers are seated in a waiting room with the three hosts, where they introduce themselves to viewers. The order of performances is decided randomly by presenter Shin Dong-yup drawing a ball containing the performer’s name, and the 500 member audience votes after each round for their favorite performance. The performer with the most votes in the episode wins.

The Contestants

Almost all the famous idols and singers have performed on Immortal Songs 2. Singers, such as Lyn, Sam Kim, FX’s Luna, and Park Jin-young have even won the show by performing impressively! Not only the veteran singers, but rookie idols, such as Samuel Kim, JBJ95, and Astro have also performed there. Take a look at some of the powerful performance below!

Immortal Songs 2 is notorious for some of the best emotional performances by the top Korean singers. Not rare that those performances move the audiences and even the singers to tears. Every singer has sung their heart out to every song with their own unique style. Now, here are some of the top emotional performances on the show:

In this episode, Ailee, one of Korea’s divas and a frequent performer on the show brings a strong performance of Yoon Bok-hee‘s 1979 song titled “Everyone.” Ailee’s charismatic charm and her deep low notes and powerful high notes really bring the best of this song!

This episode is meant to be a tribute to the late songwriter Shin Hae-chul. K.Will performs a breathtaking stage of one of Shin Hae-chul’s best songs, “Dream of the Freshwater Eel.” This performance has sure brought many people in the audience to tears, even K.Will himself couldn’t hold back his tears after finishing his performance. He said that he has listened to Shin Hae-chul’s music since he was a teenager and the late singer’s songs had the biggest impact on him.

On this ‘7 Divas’ special of the show, EXID’s Solji dedicated her performance to her mom by covering SG Wannabe’s song, “Living.” Solji had previously expressed her dream was to make a seat out of money for her mom, and she said she fulfilled her plan, saying, “This is the happiest I’ve been in my life.” Solji expressed, “There was a time I lived apart from my mother, and I chose this song thinking of that time. I cried a lot while I practiced.” Even though she wasn’t able to defeat Yangpa who took the final win, her performance was still amazing and brought a lot of people to tears.
