In the same year, Shin Ha-kyun was cast in Joint Security Area along with Lee Byung-hun and Song Kang-ho. He became a North Korean private soldier. The film was the highest grossing film in Korean history at the time and won many awards. Shin Ha-kyun also received his first awards and nominations due to his acting in this film.
