The group was originally made up of nine members, but some members left the group years after. On September 29, 2014, member Jessica announced that she had been dismissed by SM Entertainment. On October 9, 2017, SM Entertainment announced that three members of the group, Sooyoung, Seohyun, and Tiffany decided not to renew their contracts. This left SNSD with only five members, Taeyeon, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Yoona. The five who remained made a sub-unit called Oh! GG and released their first single in 2018, titled Lil’ Touch. Reportedly, the three members who left will still continue as part of SNSD, but it may be difficult to coordinate, since they are now under the different agencies. Until now, there hasn’t been any recent activity from the whole group, even the five members who remain don’t perform Oh! GG’s single on stage. As we know, after Jessica left, SNSD continued to be OT8. But, after Sooyoung, Seohyun, and Tiffany made their departure from SM Entertainment, many people predict that the group soon will be disbanded, or maybe just be OT5. The TSS departure raised big questions with public, since the agency led fans to believe that they will make a comeback as OT8, even though they’re under the different agencies. SM Entertainment made a statement denying an official disbandment of SNSD. “Girls’ Generation is a group that is precious and meaningful to SM and their fans. The members also have no thoughts at all about disbanding. Simply, as there are members whose contracts have ended, a careful decision will be made after discussions with the members about Girls’ Generation’s direction for activities in the future.” Even after that statement, many people think that it’s hopeless because people think SM isn’t going to cooperate with other agencies, especially for only a split of the profits. Taeyeon’s Solo Activities
On December 17, Taeyeon was reported to have attended the ‘1st Shiny Arts Festival’ with SNSD’s Yoona, SHINee members (except Onew due to his military service), and Red Velvet’s Yeri. The festival was titled ‘The Stories You Left Behind, The Stories We Will Continue to Write,’ in order to commemorate the one year anniversary of SHINee’s Jonghyun’s death. Taeyeon also just held her third solo concert at Jamsil Arena on October 20-21, titled ‘S… Taeyeon Concert’. As usual, her performance could never disappoint SONEs. During her performance of Fine, the background music slowly faded away until it completely disappeared, just leaving Taeyeon’s powerful vocals. It gave goosebumps, just by looking at the fancam!
Sunny’s Solo Activities
Recently, Sunny had been an MC for MBC ever 1’s Video Star. On September 1, MBC revealed that Sunny will no longer be an MC, by stating, “Sunny has decided to leave ‘Video Star’ to focus on her rehabilitation for her knee injury.” Poor Sunny unnie! Sunny was previously cast to replace SECRET’s Hyosung as MC after she departed from the program in May. Sunny’s final broadcast was aired in the middle of October.
Hyoyeon’s Solo Activities
Hyoyeon now has a new career as DJ HYO. Her official debut as a DJ happened in April, with a track titled Sober. On November 13, DJ HYO made her comeback with the track Punk Right Now, by releasing the teaser image and audio clips beforehand. Yuri’s Solo Activities
On November 2, BoA revealed that SNSD’s Yuri and Red Velvet’s Irene came to support her at a music show for her first performance of her new song, Woman, even though the show was early in the morning. BoA said they wanted to see her upside-down choreography and she was touched by their support! Yuri also took a role in a sitcom based on the popular webtoon Sound of Heart – Reboot, which will be aired on Netflix. She will play Aebong, alongside Sung Hoon, Shim Hye-jin, Tae Hang-ho, and Joo Jin-mo.
Yoona’s Solo Activities
Along with Taeyeon, Yoona also attended the ‘1st Shiny Arts Festival’ on December 17 to commemorate SHINee’s Jonghyun’s death. On the same day, MBC confirmed to Star Today about the MC line up for the 2018 MBC Gayo Daejejeon, saying that one of the MCs is SNSD’s Yoona, alongside Noh Hong Chul, Minho, and Cha Eun Woo. The other three celebrities already have MC experience from the MBC music program Show! Music Core, meanwhile, Yoona will be hosting the event for the fourth consecutive year. The show itself will be aired in December 31, celebrating the New Year moment.
Tiffany’s Solo Activities
Recently, Tiffany was involved in her father’s fraud problem. A man called Mr. A alleged he was the victim of Tiffany’s father, Mr. Hwang. Recently, Sooyoung released a new single titled Winter Breath, on December 19. This is the first time Sooyoung released a solo song after debuting with SNSD in 2007. Of course, SONEs welcome it happily! A cute thing happened when Sooyoung went on Insta Live with Seohyun to reveal what they had been doing lately and their future plans. Sooyoung’s boyfriend, Jung Kyung-ho, in an account named @jstar_allallj, kept making nonsense comments in her Instagram, such as “Is it free?”, “When does your drama air”, “Does it have a kiss scene”, “I’m going to the dentist this week, please say ‘Be strong’”, and more!
