Joseon Dynasty History
For 518 years (1392-1910), the Joseon Dynasty was one of the longest-running monarchies in the world. Its founder, Yi Seonggye, took the title of King Taejo (“Great ancestor”), moving the capital to Hanyang (Seoul). This ended the rule of the Goryeo Dynasty (Wang’s family) and was replaced by the Chonju clan from the Yi family. Referring to the surname, the Joseon Dynasty is often mistaken for the Yi Dynasty (because all Joseon kings were surnamed Yi/Lee). Besides Buddhism, Confucianism emerged as the dominant political and social power. The strict social hierarchy of Confucianism placed the king and his family at the top of the social strata, below that was the class of aristocrats (yangban) which had developed since the Goryeo Dynasty. Under there are classes of ordinary people (sangmin) such as farmers, traders, workers, and fishermen. At the bottom there are exile castes, including slaves who are employed in undesirable jobs. Social classes are passed down through generations because assimilation and liberation of status are almost impossible.
The Legend Of The Blue Sea Review
Plot
This drama tells the story of the Joseon era, where a mermaid loves a governor named Kim Dam-Ryeong, but unfortunately, their love must be blocked because of differences. In addition, the myths circulating in the area also believe that mermaids are a curse and something dangerous. Therefore, the surrounding residents also captured the mermaid and were instead made a spectacle. Until one day, when Kim Dam-Ryeong found out about this, he immediately released Se Hwa, the mermaid. Because of this, the surrounding residents also considered Kim Dam-Ryeong strange because he released the mermaid who clearly brought disaster to them. Of course, these residents also believe in this myth because it was provoked by Mr. Yang. In this day and age, this Mr. Yang is the antagonist. Mr. Yang’s character is cunning, he is also the one who caught Se Hwa and provoked the people so that Se Hwa was arrested and locked up. Turning to modern times, where Heo Joon-Jae, a fraudster and fugitive, accidentally meets a woman who suddenly enters his hotel room when he is on vacation in Spain. Heo Joon-jae also reports this woman to the nearest police station. But, Heo Joon-Jae feels uneasy after he is taken to the police station. Finally, Heo Joon-Jae also realized that this woman was unique. In the beginning, she couldn’t speak and could only answer Heo Joon-Jae’s questions with a nod or shake, she didn’t even know her own name. Something strange happened, when Heo Joon-Jae arrived in Korea, he felt something was missing. His memory is lost because the woman Heo Joon-Jae met in Spain is a mermaid. Mermaids can erase someone’s memories through kisses. Heo Joon-jae tries to remember what he missed in Spain. Heo Joon-Jae still can’t remember until he finds a woman who is also weird. She also can’t communicate and even doesn’t know her own name, until Heo Joon-Jae names her Shim Cheong, which means stupid because of her behavior that Heo Joon-Jae thinks is like a fool. Even though Shim Cheong is a strange girl whose origins are unclear, Heo Joon-Jae doesn’t tell Shim Cheong to leave because according to Heo Joon-Jae there is something that makes Heo Joon-Jae curious when he sees this woman, this rich woman he had known before. And Then! Heo Joon-Jae also realizes that this Shim Cheong, the same woman he met in Spain. And slowly, while looking for Shim Cheong’s origins, unwittingly, Heo Joon-Jae falls in love with mermaid Cheong. Unfortunately, just like in the previous life, there were also pebbles that blocked the story of the two of them.
