Please Don’t, The Single
Please Don’t was released as a single on K.Will’s Third Album Part 1, which released in 2012. The song was written by the famous lyricist Kim Eana and K.Will, composed by Kim Do-hoon (RBW), and arranged by Kim Do-hoon (RBW). Kim Do-hoon and K.Will have previously worked together on other songs, such as I Need You. The lyricist, Kim Eana, wrote excellent lyrics, giving the song a more sentimental feeling. Here’s the lyric video of the song.
The lyric tells about how difficult it is to let someone he likes go, until he hopes not to hear the news, and keeps repeating the phrase ‘Please don’t (이러지마 제발)’. When his significant other decides to leave him, the individual keep hoping to avoid the truth by using the lyric ‘I don’t ever want to wake up’. Kim Eana uses the situational lyric to help listeners easily imagine the scene. K.Will’s ‘helpless’ voice amplifies the sad vibe in the song. The album, itself, Third Album Part 1, is a collaboration between K.Will and other producers. One of them is Primary, a DJ who also produces a number of songs. K.Will and Primary collaborated on the song Come to My Crib (나가면 고생이야), which featured the rapper Beenzino for the rap part. In Korea, the album reached more than 10k in sales and charted at number six.

Dasom, a former member of girl-group SISTAR, is the lead character in the video. The other cast members are actor Ahn Jae-hyun and actor and singer Seo In-guk. The three of them are playing as friends who hid secret feelings for each other. At the end of the video, viewers get a plot twist which makes the music get even more love from viewers. Before the music video was released, photos of the cast were released that started generating buzz from fans. Let’s talk about the music video’s plot and the meaning behind it!
Music Video’s Plot and Meaning
Following the music video’s plot, there are two sections of the video; One part happens while driving in a car, and the other section is the actual conflict that’s going to explain his behavior. At the beginning of the video, Seo In-guk is seen looking upset, while driving with Dasom, his best friend. Even though Dasom is happily talking about something, Seo In-guk keeps getting reminded about something and is unhappy about it. Next, viewers start seeing flashback scenes of their relationship. Dasom has a boyfriend, played by actor Ahn Jae-hyun. Every time Dasom tries to joke around with Seo In-guk, he’d get angry with her, and Ahn Jae-hyun ends up shielding her. In other scenes, Seo In-guk always looks upset every time Dasom and Ahn Jae-hyun seem too close. The scene fast-forwards to Dasom and Ahn Jae-hyun’s wedding day. At the wedding, Seo In-guk tries to pretend he’s happy about their marriage but, deep inside, he feels jealous, which is easy to see in the scene where the couple is showing their proposal rings. Seo In-guk can’t believe with what happened but is still supporting his friends’ marriage. The scene changes again to the wedding scene, and Seo In-guk still pretending to be happy with Dasom’s wedding. Things start to escalate when Dasom and Ahn Jae-hyun are walking together to the altar. At this point, Seo In-guk is still unhappy about their marriage. Viewers might be thinking that he hates watching the girl he likes marrying someone else. Through the wedding procession, Seo In-guk is seen still holding his anger. Scenes flashback again, to the scene in the car, and he’s looking angry while holding a photo of three of them. The scene moves back to the wedding, and because he feels uncomfortable after Ahn Jae-hyun looks at him, Seo In-guk decides to go out to the balcony. Seeing his best friend went out alone, Ahn Jae-hyun asks him to take a picture together. Even though Seo In-guk rejects the request, he still stands beside Dasom and takes a picture of the three of them together. The scenes shifts back to the car and Dasom isn’t in it with him anymore. Viewers might get confused, what’s actually happened? What’s the reason behind his anger if it’s not because of Dasom? In the next scene, Seo In-guk is looking at the photo that they took at the wedding, and rips off Ahn Jae-hyun’s part. He moves the torn piece so that Ahn Jae-hyun is right next to him, and you can’t see Dasom anymore. As the video ends, Ahn Jae-hyun’s shadow appears, replacing Dasom, and Seo In-guk’s looks relieved. In that last scene, it finally becomes clear why he’s so unhappy. Seo In-guk is secretly in love with Ahn Jae-hyun, and is devastated that his crush is marrying someone else. What a plot twist! The music video’s plot lulls viewers into thinking that Seo In-guk might be falling in love with Dasom and is unhappy with her marriage, like other music videos. One unique part of the video is how the director shows Seo In-guk’s sadness through his point of view. One those moments is when Seo In-guk is standing alone on the balcony trying to calm his mind. Suddenly, Ahn Jae-hyun takes his hand and asks him to take a photo together. Through his POV, we can see Seo In-guk aimlessly following him, while looking at his hand. On other clues are in the car scenes. Those scenes become the main point in the video because those are the scenes where Seo In-guk shows his real feelings, which he works hard to hide everywhere else in the video. Viewers can feel his pain when he imagines Dasom besides him, laughing and smiling as nothing happened. We all know, deep down, Seo In-guk really hates her for ‘stealing’ his crush. Unlike other ‘normal’ music videos, the Please Don’t video shows love between two people of the same sex. This is highly controversial and rare because homosexuality is still a very taboo topic in Korea, which is why the video has been such a hot topic domestically and internationally. All the actors did a wonderful job, especially Seo In-guk. That same year, Seo In-gyuk also starred in the drama Reply 1997. In that drama, Seo In-guk’s character had a same-sex best friend who was falling in love with him, so the topic isn’t a new one for him and he feels comfortable with it. So, what do you think of the Please Don’t music video’s plot twist?
