After being viral on SNS for publishing “Cheer Up” teaser photos on TWICE’s official accounts, JYP Entertainment officially confirmed that the group would be having a comeback at the end of April 2016. On April 12th, TWICE announced that they would be releasing an EP titled Page Two. At the same time, they published the image of the album’s tracklist. There are seven songs in total, which include “My Headphones On” as the sixth track of the mini-album.Later, on April 24, TWICE released an album highlight on YouTube that featured a “My Headphones On” audio preview as well as a preview for the other tracks listed on the mini-album.Page Two and its title track “Cheer Up” were officially released on April 25, 2016. All tracks shortly became available to stream on Korean and international digital online music platforms. The physical album was on sale about a day after.
Story of “My Headphones On”
The song was composed by Niclas King and Ylva Dimberg (The Niclas Kings Kennels), two Swedish music producers who previously had worked with world-class musicians such as J.Lo, Big Sean, and Robin Thicke.“My Headphones On” was described as a mid-tempo pop song with a bit of dance and trap music influence. Some also categorize this song as a modern hip-hop song due to the captivating combination of rap, chants, and synthesizers.The lyrics of “My Headphones On” were written by Kim Eun-soo, a prominent Korean lyricist. She previously wrote song lyrics for TWICE’s “Candy Boy” back in 2015 as well as songs for other JYP former artists such as Miss A and Baek A Yeon.Lyrically speaking, “My Headphones On” tells the story of a girl’s breakup experience and how she moves on from the breakup by putting her headphones on so that she can regain her happiness and so no one will hurt her. Despite that, the official audio video for “My Headphones On” was uploaded on YouTube through JYP Entertainment’s official channel on April 30, 2016.As of August 2021, the “My Headphones On” official audio video has been viewed over 363,000 times.The song was performed in TWICELAND, TWICE’s first headlining concert tour in Asia. It was spotted by fancam that “My Headphones On” was performed at SK Olympic Handball Stadium in Seoul on February 17, 2017. In this first show, TWICE performed the song to approximately 15,000 spectators inside the stadium.It was the ninth song being performed at the concert. This was a transition song, so only six of the TWICE members performed “My Headphones On.” Jihyo, Jeongyeon, and Mina were absent in this performance and were reportedly backstage preparing to perform the next song. All six members dressed in white while the backup dancers wore black. To close the headlining tour, TWICE performed “My Headphones On” again at their encore concert at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul on June 17th, 2017. There were about 12,000 people who attended the live concert. All members wore the same black sequin blazer and skirt set. All members were present during the first four minutes of the performance. However, Jihyo, Nayeon, and Chaeyoung left halfway through the song to prepare for the next song, “Greedy”(an Ariana Grande song cover). Hence, Jihyo’s part was sung by Jeongyeon. As of August 2021, there were no music show performances of “Headphone 써” as the track was not promoted as the title track of Page Two. The song has ranked on South Korean digital music platform weekly charts such as GAON and Melon.Since “My Headphones On” was not a lead single nor a title track, the song hasn’t made it to the mainstream music charts like Billboard yet.
