Acting Debut in Love Rain

Love Rain is a 2012 South Korean television series directed by Yoon Seok-ho. Set in the seventies and the present day, it tells a love story over two generations, with Jang Geun-suk and Yoona playing dual roles. The drama depicts a 1970s pure love and a love from the present day. It’s love at first sight when Seo In-ha (Jang Geun-suk) and Kim Yoon-hee (Yoona) meet as shy university students in the seventies. It takes time for the hesitant pair to finally voice their feelings, but circumstances beyond their control send them down different paths. In 2012, In-ha (Jung Jin-young) is now unhappily married to Baek Hye-jung, one of Yoon-hee’s former best friends. He has never gotten over his first love, and when he runs into Yoon-hee (Lee Mi-sook) after so many years, the two reconcile. In-ha’s son Seo-joon (Jang Geun-suk) is a photographer, and he bumps into Yoon-hee’s daughter Jung Ha-na (Im Yoon-ah) by chance. Unlike her mother, Ha-na is a cheerful and vivacious girl, and though they initially find each other troublesome, even as they argue, they can’t help but be drawn to each other. Gradually their feelings develop, and Joon and Ha-na fall in love. In this drama, Seo In-guk has two roles. In the early episodes during the 70s, Seo In-guk plays as Kim Chang-mo, a college student who plays music together with Jang Geun-suk’s character. In the later episodes in the year 2012, he plays Kim Jeon-seol, the nephew of the 70s Kim Chang-mo who also likes to play music. This drama is Seo In-guk’s debut project after winning the audition show Superstar K in 2011. Through his role in the drama, he won the Best New Actor Award at the 5th Korea Drama Awards in 2012. He also got nominated for Best New Actor at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards.

Breakthrough in Reply 1997

Set in the 1990s, Reply 1997 follows female high-school student Shi Won (Jung Eun-ji), who idolizes the boy band H.O.T and her 5 high school friends. As a teen, Shi Won was obsessed with the boy band. Now, when she is 33 years old, Shi Won and her friends are reviving their memories as their school reunion nears. In the drama, Seo In-guk plays Yoon yoon-je, a student and also the neighbor of Sung Shi Won (Jung Eun-ji). Opposite to Shi Won, Yoon-je is the best student at the school. Thanks to the drama, Seo In-guk won a lot of awards in the period between 2012 and 2016; the Rising Star Award at the 1st K-Drama Star Awards and the Best Couple Award at the 5th Korea Drama Awards, to name some.

First Movie – No Breathing

No Breathing is a 2013 South Korean sports film set in the world of competitive swimming, starring Seo In-guk, Lee Jong-suk, and Kwon Yuri. The film was released in theaters on October 13th, 2013. In the movie, Seo In-guk plays Won-il who, like his father, was once a promising swimmer. But when his father dies during a swimming competition (where he was doing his specialty called “no breathing”), soon after followed by his mother’s death, Won-il quits swimming for good. Instead, he lives life hopelessly and recklessly, like there is no tomorrow. With Won-il in danger of being expelled from school, his father’s longtime friend Jae-suk (Park Chul-min) drags him to a physical education-focused high school, hoping that he’ll start swimming again. There, he meets his rival from a long time ago, Woo-sang (Lee Jong-suk) who in the past had always been overshadowed by Won-il. With Won-il’s absence from the sport, Woo-sang is now in the first place and is a national swimming star. But he gets disqualified from the national tryouts after getting into trouble, so he has to start from ground zero and ends up at the same Phys Ed. school as Won-il. Filming for the movie began on May 19th, 2013, and finished in mid-August, 2013. For the overseas training scenes, the movie was filmed on location in Davao City, Philippines in August 2013.

The Master’s Sun

Master’s Sun is a 2013 South Korean horror-romantic comedy television series starring So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin. The drama aired on channel SBS from August 7th to October 3rd. The story follows Kong-Ssil (Kong Hyo-jin) and Joong-won (So Ji-sub). Kong-sil was involved in an accident and since then, she is able to see and hear ghosts. Because of this, she’s unable to live a normal life. Kong-sil lives in a rooftop room at an extended stay inn and she makes a living by doing odd jobs at the inn, including cleaning. Meanwhile, Joong-won (So Ji-sub) is the president of an extravagant shopping mall named Kingdom. He is also arrogant and calculative. Everything relates to him in terms of money. The story gets interesting as Joong-won, who does not believe in ghosts, crosses path with Kong-sil, whose life is disturbed by her ability to see the ghosts. In the story, Seo In-guk plays the role of Kang-woo, a former soldier who becomes the head of security of Joong-won’s shopping mall company. He mysteriously keeps tabs on Joong-won, and notes the latter’s interest in Gong-shil, who is his neighbor at the apartment building he had recently moved into. As part of his plan, Kang-woo confesses that he likes Gong-shil, but his feelings soon begin to turn real.

Some Kind of Goodbye

Some Kind of Goodbye (another title: Another Parting) is a 2014 action-romance web drama starring Seo In-guk and Wang Ji-won. With a total of 5 episodes, this short series aired between February 17th and February 25th, 2014, through Dramacube network. The story is about a man and a woman who meet at the last moments of their life and the one very special day they share together.
