As his name began to rise, he enlisted for military duty in 2010. Unfortunately, in 2011 he was discharged early from the mandatory military service due to issues with his health. Shin Dong-wook was diagnosed with a rare condition, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CPRS). It is a chronic disease which causes extreme pain spontaneously, without knowing the cause or cure. This illness made him take a hiatus from the entertainment industry for six to seven years, which made many of his fans miss him so much and pray for his good health. Shin Dong-wook did not pass his hiatus time doing nothing (apart from medication of course). He wrote and published a fiction-romance novel titled Writing, Space Journal in 2016. The novel is about the love story between two geniuses, a wacky businessman and a theoretical physicist. Salute to him! Now, Shin Dong-wook is already back on track after his long period of medication time. He took a supporting role in the MBC television series The Guardian in 2017. His comeback was warmly welcomed by fans who were eagerly waiting for Shin Dong-wook’s appearance on the screen for years. And most recently, Shin Dong-wook got the leading role in the most awaited MBC television series Dae Jang-geum is Watching, alongside co-star Yuri from SNSD. This drama was aired in September 2018.
