Lee Byung-hun’s Acting Career
Lee Byung-hun’s love for movies and acting bloomed at an early age. While he majored in French Literature in Hanyang University, he was sure to himself that he wanted to change his field. Having decided that, he then went on to study Theatre and Cinematography at the Graduate School of Chung Ang University. After he finished his education, he enlisted for the 14th annual public audition hosted by Korean Broadcast System in 1991. Luckily, he got accepted, and made his debut in the drama Asphalt My Hometown as a character named Jinwoo. But it was the next year that he his name really became well known, when he appeared in the 1992 KBS drama Tomorrow Love. His performance as Shin Beom-su provided a mixture of toughness and softness that appealed heavily to female viewers. After receiving much love from dramas, he then tried acting on the big screen with the movie Who Drives Me Mad?, but he didn’t get as lucky as in dramas. Not until 2000, when he appeared as a Sgt. Lee Soo-hyeok, a soldier who crosses over to the North Korean side to visit his enemies in the movie Joint Security Area. Again, his acting left a deep impression on audiences and critics. The movie itself gained more than 8 million admissions, and marked as Lee Byung-hun’s first major blockbuster hit.
