HyunA’s Career: Pre-debut, 4MINUTE, Solo, Sub-units
When she was 7, HyunA tried 50 auditions to become an actress but failed all of them. She grew an interest in dance when she went to high school. Soon after, she passed an audition for JYP Entertainment on the first try and was revealed as the main rapper of WONDER GIRLS in 2006. She debuted at age 14, and during that time, she participated in the group’s television show MTV Wonder Girls for two seasons, on the first mini-album The Wonder Begins, and even co-hosted Show! Music Core with Sohee (Former Wonder Girls) and Brian Joo (Fly to the Sky). But, unfortunately, due to her parents’ concern about her health, particularly chronic gastroenteritis and fainting spells, she had to leave and was removed by her parents from Wonder Girls in 2007. However, she didn’t want to give up being a singer and joined Cube Entertainment the next year after her forced leave from Wonder Girls.
HyunA as the Center of 4MINUTE
In May 2009, it was announced that she would debut as part of the girl group 4MINUTE as the main rapper, main dancer, and even the main visual. HyunA along with the other 4 girls (Jihyun, Gayoon, Jiyoon, and Sohyun) officially debuted in June 2009 with their first single “Hot Issue” and became a hot topic for their unique concept. The group received huge popularity with their following various concepts until they finally got the nickname ‘The Strong Unnies’ with their hit song “Crazy”. But, over time, some fans noticed that 4MINUTE’s music videos focused more and more on HyunA due in large part to her charisma and provocative style, which caused the group’s disbandment in 2016. It was announced by the agency that the group would disband following their contract expiration with only HyunA renewing her contract with the management agency. Because of the sudden disbandment, fans speculated that the other four felt betrayed by HyunA or that there was some kind of discord within the group. It was also reported that the other former members held a reunion without her and shocked fans with the fact that they had unfollowed HyunA. However, later, fans discovered that it was actually HyunA who first started unfollowing the other members, prompting them to respond by unfollowing her as well. In addition to the drama between the members, fans were also angered by HyunA’s activity in 4MINUTE’s fan cafe. Pointing out that HyunA hadn’t posted in the fan cafe since 2009, many were surprised to see her make a post after the group’s official disbandment. Well, it does look they’re not on good terms, but who knows? Let’s just all keep hoping the best for all the members even though they already went their separate ways. HyunA’s Controversial Solo Debut
One year after the success of 4MINUTE in South Korea and Japan, HyunA began her solo career with “Change” which eventually charted highly on various online charts in 2010. This was all in spite of the controversy surrounding the track’s video, which was given 19+ and 15+ ratings by various television stations (the concept eventually become a provocative strength she used to her advantage). Following a string of successful appearances as a guest feature on various KPOP artists’ songs as well as several endorsement deals, HyunA made a solo return with “Bubble Pop” in 2011 and immediately cemented her place in history by breaking records with its MV release and digital sales. After greatly benefiting from her solo success, on the following years, she successfully garnered immense popularity with her controversial songs and music videos such as “Ice Cream”, “Red”, “Roll Deep”, and many others, which led her to get labeled as ‘The Sexy Queen’ of K-pop. HyunA as a Sexy Femme Fatale in TROUBLE MAKER
During her success as a solo singer, in late 2011, she attempted a challenge to debut in her new co-ed unit named TROUBLE MAKER together with Hyunseung (Former BEAST) as a duo. They debuted with a song titled “Trouble Maker” and received mixed reactions from netizens due to their live performances on weekly music shows which showed their sexually suggestive choreography. Shortly after a year of hiatus, the unit made a comeback with another controversial music video in 2013. The new track titled “Now” was a certified all-kill, and both looked more intimate than ever with the release of their racy photoshoots. It was then revealed that their relationship is nothing more than friendship even though they went through so much skinship during filming and performing. It’s unknown whether TROUBLE MAKER is already over or will return anytime soon because there hasn’t been any news about the duo since 2014. However, when HyunA was asked at the press conference for TRIPLE H’s debut, HyunA ambiguously answered, “Rather than saying, ‘We can’t see it again. It’s unfortunate’, I would like to say that it’s continuously in process. It might, unfortunately, draw to an end or we might be able to show a new side if given an opportunity again. I will continuously promote actively with various albums.” Well, if you miss them already, you may probably want to reminisce their latest MV below!
HyunA as One of the Refreshing Trio TRIPLE H
In April 2017, it was confirmed that HyunA formed a co-ed group with PENTAGON’s Hui and E’Dawn (Hyojong). Leaving TROUBLE MAKER behind, this trio named themselves Triple H. With the title track “365 Fresh”, they brought back the 90’s style with retro-funky music. The music video for “365 Fresh” tells the story of three young people who have nothing left to lose and decide to live it up during their remaining days of freedom. It shares similar themes to the Hollywood film Thelma and Louise. In the MV, there are many adult contents about sex, murder, and suicide, which might be triggering to some individuals. Therefore, many viewers from Korea were concerned about the impact of the video on young children if it was aired on a public broadcasting station. Even though many people critique the MV a lot, some fans are happy with the concept. After the official MV has released, CUBE entertainment also released the behind-the-scenes in the making of the Triple H debut track, and it shows how the TRIPLE H members are actually very innocent about the dark themes that went into the song. It shows how all three members of TRIPLE H worked very hard to bring out a whole new different side to their usual adorable and cute personalities. You can watch their fresh MV below!
