Who is Kang Seulgi?
Kang Seulgi is a member of the Korean girl-group Red Velvet. Red Velvet has been one of the most popular groups in South Korea since they debuted in 2014, and they have loyal fans both inside and outside Korea. The group originally consisted of five members: Seulgi, Irene, Wendy, and Joy, but added one more some time later, namely Kim Ye-rim or now as she’s now known, Yeri. Yeri’s entrance to Red Velvet-era Ice Cream Cake, and the arrival of Yeri into this group was well received by fans. Red Velvet became highly recognized when they became the K-pop girl-group with the most number-one albums on the charts, and tied for having the most number-one albums among all K-pop acts. They also performed in Pyongyang on April 1, 2018, which made them only the fifth idol group to ever perform in North Korea. Seulgi had the longest training period of any member in the group, having been a trainee from 2007 until Red Velvet’s debut in 2014. She was a part of the pre-debut team SM Rookies and was the first member to be revealed. She acts as lead vocalist and lead dancer for her group. Currently, Seugi also has a lot of solo activities, including singing, modeling and appreaing on variety shows. Personal Facts:
She was born in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Education: Byungmal Middle School; Seoul School of Performing Arts. Her Chinese name is Jiang sèqí (Jiang Su Qi). She’s the only member of the group who has single eyelids. Her family consist of Dad, mom, oppa (t/n: older brother), grandmother. Her zodiac sign is Aquarius. Seulgi is known for having a calm personality. She likes Pringles so much, that fans have nicknamed her “Pringles”. She can play the guitar. Her favorite type of clothes are dark colors and chic clothing. Her favorite movie is The Apple of My Eye. Her favorite type of music is calming music, New Age and acoustic music. Seulgi’s ideal type: Someone comfortable, who laughs a lot and looks pretty when they laugh. She likes to imitate Pikachu. She can speak Japanese. Her favourite number is 20. Her favorite color is orange because it’s the color of a refreshing vitamin. Since childhood, Seulgi already loved to sing and dance, and when dhe asked for permission to become a singer parents allowed her, immediately. Her hobbies are drawing and playing the guitar. She collects stickers, pens and notes. Her role model is Beyonce. She’s really good/awesome at drawing. She once drew Taeyeon and it looked real. Seulgi likes to color-coordinate her clothing. Out of the 5 members, she trained the longest, training for seven years after being cast back in 2007. She was cast through a public audition. She was a part of the pre-debut team SM Rookies, and was the first member to be revealed, alongside now-NCT members Jeno and Taeyong. She almost debuted with the stage name Rowoon. During her training years, she experienced a slump when her voice couldn’t come out, so she started training more on her dance skills, and became who she is today. Her designated color is yellow/tangerine. Her specialties are guitar, Japanese. Her representative animal is a bear. She got the nickname “Bear” from labelmate Amber from f(x). Seulgi was mentioned by labelmate Kyuhyun from Super Junior, gaining some attention before her debut. She has done an imitation of an ostrich in various variety shows. She featured in Henry’s song Butterfly pre-debut. She’s friends with f(x)’s Krystal and Sulli, also Super Junior’s Kyuhyun. She was in Henry’s Fantastic MV Seulgi was a co-host on the show “Idol Battle Likes” for the first episode. Seulgi went on Radio Star and said “I was practicing when my trainee friends came and said I’ve come up on the real-time searchers. I stayed at first place without falling”, Kyuhyun responded with the word “I’ve dug up a star”. Irene’s first impression of Seulgi was that she was odd, but that made her even cuter. Seulgi’s Career:
Seulgi began training with SM Entertainment in 2007. On December 2, 2013, she was one of the first three trainees introduced to the public through SM Entertainment’s pre-debut project, SM Rookies, alongside now-NCT members Jeno and Taeyong. In July 2014, she was featured in Henry Lau’s song Butterfly from his second EP, Fantastic. She also appeared in the music video of the single Fantastic. On August 1, 2014, Seulgi made her official debut as a member of Red Velvet. In January 2015, she starred in an SM Entertainment musical School Oz, playing the lead role of Dorothy. From April to May, she was part of the JTBC variety show Off to School. In July, 2016, she released the song Don’t Push Me with Wendy, as part of the soundtrack of the KBS2 drama, Uncontrollably Fond. In October 2016, Seulgi appeared on King of Mask Singer as a contestant under the alias Cinema Heaven. Seulgi released You, Just Like That as the theme song of Blade & Soul on November 18, composed by Yoon Sang. Seulgi and bandmate Wendy and other SM artists released a digital single titled Sound of Your Heart for SM Station on December 30. Red Velvet’s Seulgi revealed that she once went through some extreme dieting as a trainee. She currently weighs 44 kg. On the May 4 broadcast of SBS’s “Style Follow,” Seulgi and Irene appeared as guests and spent the day having fun with Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung and model Kang Seunghyun. When they sat down to eat some food, Kang Seunghyun asked, “Since we’re eating right now, I’m a little sorry to ask, but have you ever done an extreme diet?” In response, Irene shared that they dieted, especially before their debut. Sooyoung then asked, “Have you ever done one that was so extreme, it made you sad?” to which Seulgi revealed that she had, when she was asked by her company to lose weight before debuting. She said that her weight at the time wasn’t very different from her present weight, but in order to lose weight, she went through an extreme dieting method. She said, “All I had all day was soy milk. When I was so hungry that I couldn’t stand it anymore, I would drink some and persevere through it.” She revealed that, in the end, she was able to lose two kilograms (approximately 4.4 pounds). As the main dancer of Red Velvet, Seulgi works hard every day, with every practice and her busy schedule. Her appearance was a little shocking during Red Velvet’s comeback, Red Flavor, in 2017. She was really slim during album promotions, and made everyone worry. On JTBC ‘Non-Summit (Abnormal Submit)’, Seulgi revealed that she can’t resist eating spicy food. So whenever she wants to eat it, she eats it, if there is nothing scheduled. Seulgi also revealed on SBS’s ‘Style Follow’ that she was following an extreme diet, only drinking a glass of soy milk a day right before her debut. Hopefully she doesn’t have to do any more extreme diets! Seulgi didn’t have personal instagram account. But since SM Entertainment allows their group to have an instgram (@redvelvet.smtown), it’s filled with their personal posts. It feel like Seulgi itself talk to the fans.
