Group Profile

Santa Music debuted their new boy band in 2003 with four members, Ahn Jung-yeop, Yoo Na-ul, Sung-hun, and Go Young-joon. The group, named Brown Eyed Soul (Hangul: 브라운 아이드 소울), more precisely debuted on September 17th, 2003, with their debut album Soul Free. The title song, “Did I Really Love You?” made a successful debut by maintaining the top rankings on the music charts at the time and rising to the top of music broadcasting. All of the members decided to make their stage names only with their names minus the last name. Except for Sung Hoon whose last name is Hoon. Young-joon, Jung-yeop, and Seong-hoon are all vocalists boasting outstanding singing skills who have built their careers in their respective fields, starting with Naul, which is often mentioned. When discussing the best R&B vocals, Jeong-yeop mainly takes on the introductory part, Young-joon and Sung Hoon mainly take on the introductory part of Bridge or Verse 2 in turn and Naul mainly sings the chorus and highlights. And in common, in almost all songs, the main melody, Jung-yeop, sings a high chord, and Young-joon, who has an attractive mid-bass, sings a low chord, and Sung Hoon sings a lower octave of a high chord. In addition, Naul records most choruses, including the second verse, almost by himself.Their first solo concert was held in 2004. At the time, Brown Eyed Soul’s 1st album had sold 400,000 copies, showing a fairly high sales volume among the music albums that began to shift to the music market. However, compared to the 700,000 copies of Brown Eyes Vol.3 released at the end of 2003, the previous year, it was lower.Afterward, Naul released his solo remake album Back To The Soul Flight in 2005, and spent quietly with each member’s solo activities and music work, and then four years after the first album was released, the second album The Wind, The Sea, The Rain was released.Due to the characteristics of the music industry at the time when the digital music market was rapidly reorganized, the sales volume of albums decreased beyond comparison with the previous work, and the album itself was not commercially successful compared to the first album, but the title song, “My Story,” was released on 2007. It established itself as an important number of concerts succeeded in gaining popularity. In 2013, in a survey commemorating the 10th anniversary of Brown Eyed Soul, it was selected as a popular song by fans over the first mega-hit song, “Did I Really Love You?”In 2008, Brown Eyed Soul were reunited after Naul and Young-joon’s military service. After a long absence of official activities under the name of the team due to the 3rd album project, Naul canceled the call in January 2010, and soon released the first double single Blowin My Mind on March 25th. The title song is “I’ll Make Way.” According to the spelling, “I’ll Make Way” is correct, but Naul says it can be accepted as a poetic allowance. On May 12th, the second double single, Love Ballad and Never Forget was released. The title song is “Love Ballad” and in the music video, Yuri Ishizaka and Choi Daniel appeared. The last single “Can’t Stop Loving You” was released on July 6th, 2010.In addition, they also released their 3rd album Browneyed Soul with their own names as part of the album title, incorporating all double singles before December 2010 and recording new songs. On the day of the album release, the chart all-kill was achieved, including songs previously released, and despite the fact that the title song, “If It’s The Same,” had no broadcast appearances.Brown Eyed Soul also adhered to a position that did not ride terrestrial waves and focused only on concert activities, but now it has become an old saying. With the reorganization of the MBC FM radio in October 2010, Jung-yeop became a DJ following the announcer Moon Ji-ae, and Brown Eyed Soul was broadcast for the first time on Blue Night. Jung-yeop also appeared on music programs and had a successful solo album activity, and he also appeared as a fixed guest on the radio with his own members.Naul was also in charge of the KBS radio late-night program The Music World of Naul, which ran for about three years from August 2011 to December 2014. The analog-like appearance that brings and plays it directly and the public’s curiosity about Naul, who does not appear on the broadcast were overlapped, and it gained cult popularity among late-night programs and established itself. In the case of TV appearances, Jung-yeop and Sung Hoon appear in Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook on October 28th, 2011. And on January 28th, 2012, Seong-hoon appeared in Immortal Song. On March 9th, 2012, Young-joon joined the Kangta team as a dream team at Voice Korea, showing more and more approach to the public. Then, on February 5th, 2013, Naul finally appeared in the KBS Documentary 3 Days. However, unlike other members, Naul at this time appeared as a DJ who did not appear as a singer and proceeded with The Music World of Naul.According to Jung-yeop, from the end of 2012 to the beginning of 2013, Brown Eyed Soul signed a contract with Japanese entertainment agency Avex, and was planned to be active in Japan. The title track of the new album released in Japanese was “My Story,” the title track of the 2nd album. And in September 2013, the Japanese versions of the pre-release songs of the Japanese album, “I’ll Get Out” and “Love Ballad” were released. In October and December of 2013, the 10th anniversary of their debut and some of the songs from their 4th regular album were released. In February 2014, the members appeared again on Jungyeop’s last broadcast on MBC’s radio Blue Night. They announced the split release of the 4th album, but in the end, the 4th album, Thank Your Soul, was divided into Side A and Side B, and the release was decided. On February 14th, Thank Your Soul Side A was released. At midnight on December 8th, 2015, their 4th album titled Soul Cooke was released. As a double title, the titles of the two songs are “Night Melody” and “Home.” There are 17 songs in total, and there are a total of 4 solo songs by the members.Starting with the concert on May 5th, 2018, Brown Eyed Soul became active in their national tour concert. On June 30th, 2018, the concert was successfully completed. Brown Eyed Soul who had entered their 40s, which is an age far past their heyday, showed an excellent performance comparable to the concert in 2007, which was praised as the best concert so far.On September 2nd, 2019, Brown Eyed Soul announced the release of a mini-album starting with the pre-release song “Right” (featuring Sole). And on October 5th, they announced that they will be holding concerts in Daegu and Busan starting with the Seoul concert. On September 30th, 2019, at 6 PM, the studio album It’ Soul Right was released. It consists of nine tracks including the previously released single “Right,” and the music video for “Night and Day,” starring Jang Ki-yong was also released.Starting from Seoul on October 5th, 2019, Daegu on October 19th, 2019, and Busan on November 2nd, 2019, the 5th half album release commemorative concert It’ Soul Right was held. It was because there was no stage for a concert in 2019 that was not successfully completed, nor a solo song that wasn’t covered with a high note, and even if they weren’t in good condition, it was good. Brown Eyed Soul sang “My Story” as an encore; it was a timeless performance that surpassed their hit song in 2007.
